Quality indicators for the management of lung cancer in Flanders

Status
Ongoing
The Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) is collaborating with the Vlaams Instituut voor Kwaliteit van Zorg (VIKZ) (Flemish Institute for Quality of Care) to evaluate the quality of care within the oncology field in Flanders for various cancer types.

Working with VIKZ, BCR calculated seven quality indicators for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer for each Flemish hospital. These results were reported on the website zorgkwaliteit.be. We are currently monitoring patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2017 and 2019. These results will be compared with previous measurements (2012–2016) to identify changes in quality of care.

Within the lung cancer development group, and in collaboration with clinical experts in lung cancer care, VIKZ and BCR selected quality indicators from KCE-Rapport 266 "Quality indicators for the management of lung cancer", which was also produced in collaboration with BCR. These indicators are calculated using cancer registration data and data on reimbursed medical services and medication obtained by the Agence InterMutualiste (AIM) (the agency responsible for collating data from Belgium’s seven health insurance funds). The validated methodology of the KCE study was used for a first calculation of the indicators for all hospitals in Flanders. After these results were validated by all Flemish hospitals, the methodology was refined, and final calculations were made for patients diagnosed between 2012 and 2016. This methodology was repeated for the 2017–2019 monitoring.

The results will be made public (for the hospitals that give permission) on the website zorgkwaliteit.be. In addition, all hospitals will receive detailed feedback on progress compared to the 2012–2016 period.
